The fastest growing and most successful street scene block party known as Taste of Soul shutting down Crenshaw Blvd. once again on October 18th, added two new media sponsors when it was revealed that 94.7 The Wave will replace V100 which has since been sold and Radio Free KJLH 102.3.

The culinary extravaganza, which blends a massive variety of delicious foods with music, song and dance in a carnival style atmosphere attracted a record 75,000 people last year.

“We look forward to welcoming our wonderful clients and listeners to this premiere event in the city of Los Angeles, said 94.7 The Wave vice president and General Manager Dan Weiner. “With the collaboration of these two wonderful companies, the attendees will see an even bigger event this year.”

Radio Free KJLH will be hosting the gospel concert at the elaborate event much to the delight of marketing director Gregory L. Johnson.

“Gospel music is an integral part of our musical expression at 102.3 Radio Free KJLH. We’re excited to be a part of Taste of Soul with a superior line-up of highly inspired musical guest from all over our community.”

KJLH program director Aundrae Russell chimed in,: “ We’ll also bring some of your favorite artists straight from the play list of Spread the Word, where every Sunday I am proud to deliver a heritage of Gospel music to the city of Los Angeles.”

Taste of Soul is the brainchild of Sentinel Executive Publisher Danny Bakewell Sr. who dared to go where many said he could not go with the event and after mushrooming from 50,000 to 75,000 spectators in the first two years, has pledged that reaching 100,000 could be next.

“It has always been the vision of my father to bring about the best for our people and our community and what has transformed with Taste of Soul is an example that our dreams as a family and as members of the proud African American community has no limits,” stated Sentinel Vice President and executive editor Danny Bakewell Jr.

R&B artist and 94.7 The Wave air personality Brian McKnight will serve as host of the main stage concert that again is expected to draw a bevy of A-list performers.

Taste of Soul, which would not be possible without the help of councilman Herb Wesson, is sponsored by the Sentinel, 94.7 The Wave, Radio Free KJLH, Mothers in Action.

Come on, this is a one day event! Charging small business owners and entrepreneurs $1,000 for a booth for a day is not in the spirit of community. That fee is equivalent to approximately half a month's retail space rent in Leimert and the surrounding area. Quite frankly, I attend street fairs like Taste of Soul to not only hear the music , but especially to meet these vendors and sample their wares. Charge higher fees to large sponsors and corporations who can absorb the cost, however, please lower the fee or consider a plan similar to the Leimert farmer's market, wherein a percentage of sales is paid to the hosting entity. I had a great time last year, and look forward to seeing a diversified array of new vendors this year. Keep breathing life into this vibrant community!
