In preparation for the competition, the students followed a rigorous curriculum under the guidance of their teachers and professionals in their field of endeavor for the entire year.

Other students who competed at the National level were Crystal Burton in the category of dance; Morgan Strickland in oratory; David Brisco in the category of contemporary instrumental music; Spencer Prescod in drawing; Khalid Stephens in the category of painting; and Tyree Boyd-Pates in drama.

Students are recruited from public and private schools in the local Los Angeles area. There are twenty-eight categories that interested students may compete. All participants must compete at the local level. Gold winners will be able to compete with all expenses paid at the national level.

Chaperones that traveled with the students were Gloria Brown, Alexandria Harpole, Patricia Long and Mary Louise Batiste, ACT-SO Chair.
