Los Angeles City Council-member Herb J. Wesson, Jr. recently joined Fire Chief Douglas Barry, Public Works Commissioner Valerie Lynn Shaw, City Engineer Gary Lee Moore, firefighters and a host of community residents and supporters at the groundbreaking ceremony for the major expansion and enhancements at Fire Station 94 which serves the Baldwin Hills and the Crenshaw districts.

“This is an important project.” Wesson said. “Renovating and improving our fire stations is essential to the safety of our community. Our brave firefighters are protecting our residents and they deserve an improved, modern, and well-equipped facility.” He added.

Built in 1960, Fire Station 94 is an existing fire station on the corner of Coliseum Street and Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard that has been serving the community for nearly 50 years.

The structure will receive a substantial renovation that will include the addition of a 2-acre site to the rear of the existing facility. The renovated station will be expanded to 15,250 square feet. In addition, there will be a 6,000 square foot apparatus storage building and a new 2,500 square foot community multi-purpose room.

“In addition to the extra space that will be able to accommodate new and more up-to-date fire fighting equipment, I am delighted that the new station will also house a community room.” Wesson added. “The multi-purpose room will be available to all of the members of the community.

The estimated cost of the project is $14 million, and will be funded entirely by proceeds from Proposition F, approved by Los Angeles voters in 2000 to finance and rehabilitate fire stations throughout the City of Los Angeles. “Anything that we can do to improve the facilities and services for the citizens of Baldwin Hills and the residents of Baldwin Village is a good investment and money well-spent.” Wesson concluded.
