CNS - Los Angeles City Councilman Eric Garcetti won a second term as council president thanks to a unanimous vote by his colleagues July 3.

Garcetti, the son of a former district attorney, became council president on Jan. 1, 2006, after his predecessor, Alex Padilla, stepped down to concentrate on his successful bid for the state Senate’s 20th District seat.

As council president, Garcetti runs meetings, makes committee assignment and helps set the council agendas, among other things. The council president serves a two-year term.

Garcetti was elected to the City Council’s 13th District to represent the Hollywood area in 2001 and re-elected in 2005.

“I want to thank all of my colleagues for the honor of serving as your council president, I accept this position with purpose,” Garcetti told his colleagues.

“We represent very different parts of the city, but we serve one people,” he said. “And just as we take an oath to serve the people of Los Angeles, I promise to you today to do everything in my power to serve you over the next two years.”

Councilwoman Wendy Greuel was unanimously elected by her peers as council president pro-tem. Greuel was elected to the council’s 2nd District seat in 2002 to fill the remainder of the term of longtime Councilman Joel Wachs.

Greuel was elected to her first full term in 2003 and re-elected in March to represent the northeast San Fernando Valley.
