Climbing the Jacobs Ladder

With the recent postponement of the Mayweather/Marquez fight slated for July 18, the sport of boxing could use a boost right about now.

Money May has barbeque ribs which forced him to reschedule his highly anticipated return engagement in which those high priced tickets were not selling so brisk despite the promotional flood waters.

So, now we left with a local small card on Friday at the Nokia and on the same night the national television debut of 'The Golden Child' Daniel Jacobs who will showcase his vastly improving skills on ESPN Friday Night Fights.

Jacobs is another Al Haymon managed fighter who is just 22 years old and sporting a 16-0 report card with 14 KO's.

Already ranked among the top 30 middleweights in the world, the young Brooklyn born fighter who now makes his home in Las Vegas is creeping up the title ladder and peaking into a division that is primed for a new star.

Kelly Pavilik has been exposed by the old man Bernard Hopkins who has since set his sights on the light heavyweight or cruiserweight divisions, and action fists Paul Williams is floating in and out of any division to find anyone who is willing the be punished by him.

The good looking Jacobs possess a rare combination of power and speed, but his last fight went the eight round distance for the first time, question if he actually has the sort of power to put an opponent away with one shot.

In George Walton (20-3/12KO's) he will have to opportunity of staying active and improving his record, but while be televised to a national audience as the main entrŽe subjective to open criticism that comes with the hype.

Against a determined Michael Walker last month at the MGM Grand, Jacobs was tested and survived. To his credit he got right back to work realizing that probably few people outside the arena that night paid much attention to him.

That will change on Friday and perhaps the next step up the ladder he takes will be one that we can remember.
