For years, Compton has struggled to escape its reputation of gangs and homicide but five years ago, political and community leaders sought to change that when they introduced the first Summer Soul Jam concert. Held at the Par 3 Golf Course, they sought to create a new vision for Compton and its residents by holding a community gathering in a safe environment complete with live music sponsored by radio station KJLH (102.3 FM) and plenty of delicious food from local vendors. Last year, this new vision took a bold new shape as KJLH, Sentinel executive publisher Danny Bakewell, Jr. and Compton Councilmember Isadore Hall, III brought another wave of legendary artists that included gospel legend Yolanda Adams, soul musician Clarence Carter and funk/soul icon Isaac Hayes. With plenty of tasty treats lining the venue, it was an event to remember and all who attended couldn’t wait to come back for the next one. And the 2008 Soul Jam promises to build on that anticipation. On August 16, actress Holly Robinson-Peete will join Councilmember Hall and Bakewell Sr. as event host of a star-studded lineup that will feature Grammy-nominated singer Anthony Hamilton, his wife Tarsha’, Grammy-nominated R&B legend Charlie Wilson of the Gap Band and comedian/actor D.L. Hughley. Others featured on the bill are music producer and Southern California native Rickey Minor, Grammy-winning singer Jody Watley, actress Tisha Campell-Martin (“Martin,” “My Wife and Kids”), comedian J. Anthony Brown and Grammy-nominated R&B legend Johnny Gill of New Edition. It promises to be an exciting way to celebrate the final month of summer as the Sentinel and KJLH present the annual Summer Soul Jam. |
