During the Compton City Council meeting this week, council members called for City Attorney Craig J. Cornwell to continue his investigations into activities that may have long-range implications for the city and its citizens.

Cornwell plans to request the council’s approval to further investigate the financial relationship between Tyrone Freeman and the Long-Term Care Housing Corp. to determine if these transactions led to the misuse of public funds and to take whatever legal recourse may be necessary to recover any public monies that may have been wrongly appropriated in real estate transactions between the corporation and the City.

“We are in the initial stages of our investigation, but have discovered reason to believe that these real estate transaction may have been based on false statements concerning the validity of Freeman’s nonprofit status when they were undertaken,” says Cornwell, adding that “We will be looking into the subject transactions and will give the entities involved an opportunity to provide information concerning these transactions.”

Compton Mayor Eric J. Perrodin is in full agreement with the City Attorney’s desire to continue his investigations and fully supports the idea of complete disclosure of the investigation when it is completed. City Councilmember Isodore Hall noted that “the concept of low-income affordable housing is great. However, I am outraged over the most recent revelations about Mr. Freeman, and, if this investigation reveals any inappropriate action, our city council will take a no-nonsense position toward these actions and will hold all parties accountable.”

The investigation concerns real estate dealings in which Freeman allegedly advised the city that Freeman’s organization was a bona fide nonprofit long-term care housing corporation and, therefore, eligible for discounted purchase of land.

“We want the citizens of Compton to know that this matter will be fully investigated until we discover the truth,” says Cornwell.

Known as the “Hub City” because of its unique position in almost the exact geographical center of Los Angeles County, Compton is strategically located along the Alameda Corridor, a passageway of 25 percent of all U.S. waterborne international trade. Compton is rapidly emerging as a large industrial center in Los Angeles County for transit and distribution, business services, high technology, home and lifestyle products, metals, financial services, and textile manufacturing.
