Compton Continues its Upward Mobility

The city is showcasing its development potential by inviting all residents interested in the construction field to come out to its First Apprentice Drive

The Compton Redevelopment Agency (CRA) is teaming up with the Compton Careerlink to host the First Apprentice Drive. The project is intended to provide those who are interested with current information relative to gaining employment in the construction and similar-related fields. In addition, the "drive" will also provide an onsite opportunity to register with the State of California's Apprenticeship Program which is a requirement to be able to work on any construction project in the state that is licensed and bonded.

In order to facilitate many of the progressive undertakings that have been mentioned in this column for the past three weeks, all of the city's leadership has had to work in concert. Two of the named officials in leadership positions are Councilwoman Lillie Dobson and City Clerk Alita McGreggor-Godwin.

Dobson was appointed to the City Council District 2 in 2003 and was subsequently elected to a full term in June 2005. Before she became a member of the city council, Dobson was a successful businesswoman and it appears that her business acumen has served the citizens of Compton well since she has been on the city council. It is that coordinated business effort that has allowed the city to be in its present state of upward mobility. According to her website, she is co-owner of Solomon's Mortuary in Los Angeles and there is no better experience than the first hand experience that combines elective office and personal private enterprise.

Her legislative agenda consists of improving the quality of life of Compton citizens, reducing crime, citywide beautification, and increasing public safety. In addition, she's actively involved in several civic and professional organizations.

As the city clerk, McGreggor-Godwin is literally the clerk of the municipality and that is one of the oldest public servant positions that was established in the country. She is the official keeper of the city records and is responsible for recording all council, city and mayoral related actions. Also as the city continues to grow, the city clerk's responsibility increases due to the input of numerous departments and agencies within the municipal jurisdiction.

McGreggor-Godwin has been with the city for about 25 years and has held several key positions including administrative technician, deputy city clerk and chief deputy city clerk; she has also worked as the records clerk for the Compton Police Department. In 2007, she was awarded the prestigious designation, "Certified Municipal Clerk" (CMC, a distinction that she gracefully wears after her title) from the International Institute of Municipal Clerks.

A native Californian, McGreggor-Godwin was elected as city clerk in April 2005 and with her other elected and appointed colleagues, she is placing Compton on the map of progressive municipalities.
