Congresswoman Laura Richardson today announced that California will be the recipient of nearly $12 million in federal grant funding to enhance cooperation and coordination between federal, state and local law enforcement agencies in joint missions to secure US borders.

"Securing our boarders must be a top priority," Congresswoman Richardson said. "As a member of the Homeland Security committee, I am pleased to announce that California has been awarded a grant by the US Department of Homeland Security's Operation Stonegarden program for almost $12 million."

At a time when local governments are struggling to keep police officers on the streets, these funds will be used to assist local authorities with operational costs and equipment purchases that contribute to border security," Congresswoman Richardson added. "To the degree our neighbors in San Diego can better enforce our borders reduces some of law enforcement expenses that we bear on the back end."

Operation Stonegarden began as a successful pilot program in fiscal year 2005 that involved 14 border-states.
