Dr. Earnestine Thomas-Robertson retires from the Los Angeles Community College District as Dean of Academic Affairs at Los Angeles Southwest College
Civic leaders, corporate executives, educators and administrators from around the nation packed the Proud Bird Restaurant in Los Angeles, California, Wednesday, November 4, 2009 to support and recognize the distinguished achievements and career of Dr. Earnestine Thomas-Robertson on the occasion of her Retirement from the Los Angeles Community College District as Dean of Academic Affairs at Los Angeles Southwest College.
The retirement gala generated accolades such as "gifted," "visionary," "articulate" "outstanding leader" and "empowering teacher" from politician's, colleagues, students and friends in speeches, plaques, and proclamations.
The laudable list of titles and positions she has held, such as educator, administrator, author and civic leader cannot capture the vast contribution that she has made in the lives of a myriad of people she has touched over the years. She has been a cornerstone at Los Angeles Southwest College for more than 32 years and has empowered many students, faculty and staff with a profound message of purpose, hope and courage, not only by her words but by her actions.
The tone of the retirement celebration centered around the theme "Local in her actions, Global in her thinking while transcending local communities into global networks" which is the foundational life lesson based on the premise of respect for all human beings that transcends race, gender and class differences. Her commitment to modeling a multicultural and global vision for the world which has been reflected in her conceptualization, development and organization of many innovative and campus programs such as: The 14 Strategies For The Development of the African American Manchild Conferences, Six International Education Forums with campus wide participation, Eight International Education Day programs at Los Angeles Southwest College where seven cultures and up to 26 countries were represented, showcased and celebrated.
On hand at this energized event of speeches and musical tributes were the civic and professional organizations such as the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Los Angeles World Affairs Council, the International Consultants of Blackbird International, the Academy of Political Science, the American Association of University Professors, The Board of Directors of the Mayors Council on Sister Cities & International Visitors, Afrique Historie, an International Publication; Pepperdine University, Educational Services, Black Women's Forum, medical and law firms and a host of other organizations.
Dr. Robertson will continue to serve as President of the Los Angeles Lusaka Sister City Committee and remain active in the community. She also plans to write two books for publication. Dr. Robertson will not only be missed at Los Angeles Southwest College as a "bridge" uniting people from all walks of life, but also, as a teacher and administrator who was able to create an atmosphere of challenge, of competence, of achievement and most importantly of courage.
