Score’s motto:  When they love to learn, they'll learn

Score Educational Centers have been popping up all around this country since 1992, instilling in children the idea that learning can be fun. That excitement has found its way to the Crenshaw District, where students can now sign up for enrollment at a new location.

On the corner of Crenshaw and Coliseum, specifically 3736 Crenshaw Blvd., you will find the newly constructed Score Educational Center. Once inside, you will see just what the talk is all about.

Decorated in simple primary colors, the center houses two designated areas for academic assistance—one with groupings of computers of no more than seven students per tutor, and the other a more traditional table-and-chairs setting for personal tutoring of no more than three students per tutor. But both are enhanced to provide an atmosphere of fun—a basketball hoop on one wall, a goal-oriented trail on another, and an off-centered encasement of prizes.

Students can earn the prizes, including Frisbees, stuffed animals, gift certificates and tickets to Disneyland, by achieving a certain ‘score’ at the end of their tutoring session. But all along the way, they are also receiving positive reinforcement from their tutors, whether it’s a high-five, words of encouragement or being allowed to take a few shots at the hoop.

“We’ve tried to come up with a really creative, enjoyable atmosphere where the kids not only improve their [academic] skills, but they’re getting lots of positive reinforcement,” says Avianta Robertson, the center’s director. “It’s all about making it a positive experience. ...They walk out feeling that they’ve learned something new or that they can overcome a challenge.”

Robertson says that there are all types of students enrolled in the program. Some come for remedial instruction and others come for enrichment skills. But all are there to learn, and enjoy it.

“We are beyond a tutoring center,” Robertson continues. “I call it a ‘learning’ center. ...It’s an enrichment experience where the focus of the program is to make learning a fun experience.”

Score Educational Centers are part of the Kaplan family that works with children in grades pre-K through 10th to help them reach their academic potential in math, reading, spelling and writing. With a combination of personal academic coaching, positive reinforcement, and a customized curriculum that adapts to each child’s pace and learning needs, enrolled students learn to love to learn.
