First Lady Michelle Obama

The First Lady stops in Los Angeles to promote “Let’s Move” campaign and attend fundraisers throughout the city.

First Lady Michelle Obama made a brief, two-day visit to Los Angeles Tuesday and Wednesday, promoting her “Let’s Move” health initiative. She also attended Democrat fundraisers for re-election campaigns for her husband in the Los Angeles area. One of the first lady’s stops included a visit on Jay Leno’s “Tonight Show.”

Also on her her itinerary was a stop at the future site of the Northgate Gonzalez Markets in Inglewood, Calif. The first lady joined Inglewood Mayor James Butts, Dr. Robert Ross, CEO of the California Endowment, and community leaders from around Los Angeles highlighting the progress being made to increase access to healthy, affordable food in underserved communities.

Last July, Mrs. Obama announced nationwide commitments to increase access to healthy food, which included the creation of the California FreshWorks Fund (CAFWF), an innovative public-private financing fund designed to bring affordable fresh and healthy foods to critical food access areas in California.

Northgate, once a small family-owned grocery store, has grown to be a community staple in dozens of locations across California. Northgate's newest locations promise to be among the first success stories for the CAFWF.

These locations will provide access to fresh, healthy foods to “food deserts,” which are communities that lack grocery chains. The FreshWorks Fund is building a long-term partnership with Northgate by providing the financing for their stores.
