Several no-cost preschool programs in the south and central areas of Los Angeles are still looking for students to immediately fill Head Start classes for the 2007-08 school year.

A total of four nonprofit community agencies (see list below) are seeking to enroll children—ages three and four—for Head Start federally funded programs that provide comprehensive services to poor and low-income children and families.

Households that meet the federal poverty income requirements are eligible to apply for the programs. Eligibility may be extended to a limited number of families whose incomes exceed the federal poverty standards.

Head Start programs are designed to nurture and prepare children for success in school. The programs provide early childhood education, health/dental assessments and referrals, healthy meals, mental health counseling, and social service referrals. Services are also available to meet the special needs of children with disabilities.

Head Start offers half-day programs from four to five days a week. In some areas full-day programs are available. In most cases, children receive services in a center-based setting, but a home visitor who provides services in the home is available in some programs.

Applications will be taken until all enrollment slots are filled:

  • Delta Sigma Theta, 5120 Goldleaf Circle, Suite 270, Los Angeles 323-295-2601
  • Kedren Community Health Center, 710 E. 111th Place, Los Angeles 323-299-9742
  • Los Angeles Urban League, 7226 S. Figueroa St., Los Angeles 323-753-2401
  • Pacific Asian Consortium in Employment, 1050 Wilshire Blvd., Ste. 1050, Los Angeles 213-989-3244

The agencies listed above are Head Start contract delegate agencies under the Downey-based Los Angeles County Office of Education, which provides programs and services to school districts, communities and students.
