A new queen was chosen to reign over Los Angeles’ 23rd annual Kingdom Day Parade, which will be held January 21. Nineteen-year-old Adriana Constante, a freshman at California State University Long Beach studying political science, and two runners up, were named last Thursday after an intensive interview session. First runner up Wyvetta Taylor, a 16-year-old junior at View Park Preparatory Accelerated High School, second runner up Kameron Brown, a 19-year-old sophomore at Cal State Long Beach studying communications, and Constante each received a crown and sash from 2007 queen, Alexandria Hutchinson. Before officially passing on her title, Hutchinson advised the three young ladies to use their year-long reign as an opportunity to network. “Being queen is not just about riding on a float during the Kingdom Day Parade,” she commented. “It’s an opportunity where you are able meet lot of people and network. And it’s also about learning the business. “You will be attending many events throughout the year, and will be a reflection of the parade’s founder, Mr. Larry Grant. So, speak up, show poise and grace, and let everyone know you’re not just a pretty smile but that you also have a personality.” Larry Grant founded the Kingdom Day Parade nearly 30 years ago in San Diego, California and has since relocated the event to Los Angeles. Thousands of people line the streets annually to watch the floats and special guests in honor of civil rights activist, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Of Dr. King, Grant commented, “I never met him, but I’d always admired him and what he stood for. ...I admired him for his non-violence. The man mesmerized me when he spoke. He had such verbal skills, unbelievable.” This year’s parade to be held Monday, January 21, 2008 from 11am to 1pm, will begin on Western Ave and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, roll down Crenshaw Blvd and end on Vernon Ave.
