The brilliant and astonishing Vocalist Jessye Norman performed at The Royce Hall at University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) followed by a Private Post Concert Reception featuring Composer Laura Karpman, who performed a masterpiece, entitled, “Ask Your Mama.”

The performances took place on May 8.

The piece was derived from the famous poet Langston Hughes and performed by Karpman to honor Norman’s outstanding work in the Orchestra world. As a matter fact, Norman has performed some of the most amazing songs including “The American Song” and the “The French Melody,” which she performed at the Royce Hall.

“I am so very excited to share information with you about our collaboration, “Ask Your Mama,” Karpman said. “[This performance is] the first vocal, orchestral, multimedia setting of Langston Hughes’ epic poem.”

Karpman said “Ask Your Mama” would appear at the 2009 Jazz festival in the Carnegie Hall on March 16 with feature artist Jessye Norman and St. Lukes Orchestra.

“We would be so deeply grateful if you would join the “Ask Your Mama” family, Carnegie Hall has been enormously generous with their support of this project,” Karpman said. “With your vision, ideas, and contributions, “Ask Your Mama” will be [what] Langston Hughes so brilliantly envisioned.”
