Racism Leads to Cancellation of Black Gay Pride Annual Beach Party in Malibu

The 2008 Independence Day holiday weekend marks the 20th anniversary for Los Angeles’ Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender pride best known as At the Beach Los Angeles Black Pride. While you may not ever read about in the Los Angeles Times or see it on the evening news, the Los Angeles Black Pride annual beach party celebration at Point Dume in Malibu is one of the most anticipated events of the years for Los Angeles’ Black gay community that rarely sees itself reflected in the June pride celebration in West Hollywood.

ATB was co-founded in part by Duane Bremond, who passed away in 2003 after following in the footsteps of his father community activist Walter Bremond, founder of The Brotherhood Crusade/Black United Fund. ATB organizers saw a need for a strong social base in the African-American gay community. Out of that idea and a small gathering of friends at Malibu Beach grew an entire organization and one of the most highly attended Black gay pride celebrations in the country.

Black gay prides started in the 80s in large part because a lot of the gay pride events were overwhelmingly white and for the most part they still are. As Black lesbians and gays we wanted to celebrate not only our sexual orientation and identity but our race and cultural heritage as well. Plainly put, that wasn’t going to happen in West Hollywood.

However, with that said, it is still a Black event taking place in a predominantly white part of town. A town that for the past several years hasn’t been too keen on thousands of Black bodies ascending upon it’s beaches on a holiday weekend and finally found a way in an effort to move the celebration from Malibu this year.

The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, in cahoots with the City of Malibu, has at the last minute issued a new “special condition,” a 200 percent increase in fees to the tune of $18,000 and a reduction in the hours and operation of Pride, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. this year. They are claiming this is needed because of an incident that occurred last year, an incident in which the Sheriff’s are claiming a gun was brandished and a near riot erupted.

However, I was there last year and I don’t recall all of that going down. I’m just saying, there maybe a bit of exaggeration on the part of the Sheriff’s Department to the benefit of the City of Malibu.

I’m not surprised though. It’s no secret that over the years, Black Pride participants have consistently and quietly dealt with the harassment and the racism from the Sheriff’s office including having their cars were towed, getting ticketed, and unwarranted searches.

I have very mixed feelings about the whole situation, but I’m clear that if this were a different gay pride celebration, that this would not be happening. But it’s not, it’s Black gay pride.

I am still going to the beach on Saturday, camcorder in hand, and I wish a deputy would tell me to get off of a free beach.

First there’s the great restroom scandal at the Beverly Hills Hotel where a Black lesbian would forced out of the women’s restroom after being mistaken for a man, then weeks of television news reports featuring lily white couples getting married, followed by the over sensationalized and sad tragic story involving two lesbians accused of abusing and torturing a 5-year-old boy, and now no Black pride beach party.

We know it’s no easy task to be Black, but being Black and gay isn’t any better at times.

I'm having problems with this story...

On the one hand, this "special condition" seemed to be a broad explanation. What did the city claim the additional $12,000 (If my math is correct ) would pay for? Security? Cleaning fees? Additionally, what OTHER comparable events that occured in the area were charged in the same way? ANY? Providing those comparisons would have given teeth to the claims of racism.

On the other hand... the article seems to gloss over whatever the facts were at this event last year where there was allegedly 'a brewing riot," and the subsequent reason for the city fee hike. If I lived in MALIBU where this was taking place, I would probably take issue with a large crowd of ANYBODY disturbing my peace too - if there was a history of not so nice ish goin' on....

The problem I have with the article is that it outwardly appears more agenda based than anything - as opposed to raising awareness of a critical problem of racism at the hands of a city.

Sorry, but this article is slanted and does not offer any information about the real supposed problem.

We own property in Malibu. There were some issues with this event in the past. I see nothing wrong in securing addition funds/insurance for this event based on past experience.

Why is it that some want to cry racism about everything!

Check the problems, then work on a solution.

In case you are wondering we are black. Yes, black folks do own property in Malibu!

This article is a complete lie. Jasmyne has since reported the truth on her blog. She needs to report the truth here too. Racism was not the case. Lazy promoters who are money hungry and igrnore the ocmmunity is the reason the event was cancelled.

NOT A GOOD LOOK PEOPLE!!!

OK - this ish bothers me to no end.... I think I raised my point already, but now it's time to speak my peace since the damage has been done.

Here we are (after the fact) now with SOME apparent facts about this situation - SEE http://www.jasmynecannick.com/ blog/?p=1986 AND after many of us were ready to "RIDE ON A MUTHAFU*%A... for tha cause..."

Now I'm 100000000% FOR US!!! (BLACK FOLK) And even tho I can't front that my my position on this "gay ish" is less to be desired, I believe that when it comes to racism, NI66AZ should stand together.

People should live and let live since there is one maker and one judge and when we don't want judgement to be passed on us by some NON-HIGHER POWER. I hold that position despite my moral convictions because I know - everyone will be held accountable when they meet their maker and I DON'T WANT NO humans bein' the JUDGE OF ME!!!!

That said...

This article (and situations like it) does MUCH DAMAGE to the plight of Arican Americans / Blacks (WHATEVER THE HELL YOU WANT TO CALL YOURSELF) because it makes us look like complainers. Stop bein' so - quick to throw up racism without havin' some **** to back it up... It hurts us more than it helps us! At least make the **** look good!!!! Basically... STOP CRYIN' WOLF!!!! Cause when it's real, ain't nobody goan listen!

I would love more than anything to BLAST this obviously gay promoting article, but I won't. BUT - we need to get our **** together. We're on the verge of havin' a Black President who can certainly help promote our causes. This type of thing is counter productive. If we are to to use him to our advantage, (at a minimum) facts should a requirement to substantiate our arguments! Otherwise, claims of racism falls on deaf ears.
