Bethel AME LA, one of the most renowned churches in Los Angles, led by Rev. Dr. Lewis L. Logan, II, recently hosted an Appreciation Celebration in honor of the pastor and First Lady, Sudonna Moss-Logan, at their church at 7900 Western Avenue.

In a musical and spirit-filled, hours-long, and fast-flowing service led by Rev. Terry Brown of Liberty Baptist Church in Los Angeles, a full sanctuary enjoyed a moving spiritual sermon from Rev. Dr. L.A. Kassee of Bethany Baptist Church in Los Angeles as well as choral presentations from the Bethany Baptist Church Choir, the Power of Love Christian Fellowship Family Choir, as well as several moving solo performances.

"We are here to celebrate a man of God." Rev. Brown declared in his welcoming remarks.

Religious and community leaders, elected officials, church members, guests, visitors, and others were present to share an afternoon of celebration with the honorees. In addition to the moving sermon by Dr. Kassee, Bishop Edward R. Turner, spiritual leader of the Power of Love Christian Fellowship, and Brother Toni Muhammad of the Nation of Islam, shared the podium and offered their accolades along with a host of others who shared their praise and appreciation.

 Elaine Meggs, a 35-year member of Bethel AME LA, offered her observations about Dr. and Mrs. Logan, and why a Service of Appreciation was in order. "Dr. Logan is a very caring person." She said. "He brought the Hour of Power and the Thursday Night Bible Study and he certainly treats us all like a family," referring to the approximate 1100 members who attend the church on a regular basis.

Ruth Latham, another church and Usher Board member added. "Dr. Logan gives a lot of his time to the church, the community and our young people." She said. "He is involved in every aspect of this church."

In addition to the anticipated positive remarks that are typical of a pastor appreciation service, the openness of Bethel AME LA, which is expressed in their mission statement: Holistic Ministry to the Whole House of God, was highlighted throughout the program.

Besides commendations from Los Angeles County Supervisor Yvonne B. Burke, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, State Senator Mark Ridley-Thomas, Los Angeles City Council Member Bernard C. Parks, Inglewood Mayor Roosevelt Dorn, and Compton City Council Member Isadore Hall, special recognition and appreciation was expressed by members of several gang prevention organizations which have benefited from the openness and generosity of Dr. Logan and his church.

Ben Owens, AKA Taco, an associate of the Cease Fire Committee, put one aspect of Dr. Logan's community work in perspective. "Over three years ago," he explained, "Pastor Logan opened his church doors for gang intervention program meetings for groups throughout Los Angeles County and we have been effective."

"Gang members, law enforcement officials, community and church leaders and others have come together," he continued, "and gang violence is at its lowest point in 40 years."

Dr. Logan and Mrs. Logan were visibly humbled by the supportive and generous comments of those who were able to participate in the Service of Appreciation.

"Thank you on behalf of Bethel AME." He said. "We are community minded and everyone is welcome."
