(San Bernardino, ca) – On January 12, Stop the Violence Increase the Peace Foundation (STVIP) presented Terrence Stone, CEO of Young Visionary Youth Leadership Academy (YVYLA) a check at the group’s annual dinner as part of the San Bernardino Area Gang Prevention Services.
Among the honorees were Assemblywoman Wilma Amina Carter, San Bernardino Supervisor Josie Gonzales, and Rialto Mayor Aquanetta Warren and other local officials.
The grant will target San Bernardino middle and high school students in an effort to prevent gang involvement and reverse the growing rate of high school drop-outs.
The 3-year, multi-tiered program will provide, after-school and high school graduation preparation classes to youth between the ages of 14 and 18, and a parenting and gang awareness program entitled, “How Can I Tell if My Child is in a Gang and What to Do About It”.
Facilitators will be a part of the Train-the-Trainer course that was developed in part by Professor Emeritus Amen Rah, Cal State Long Beach and STVIP.
The program was part of a 6-month Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP0 gang prevention model taught last year at California State University, San Bernardino’s College of Extended Learning.
Some of the classes included were, Substance Abuse, Conflict Resolution, Peer Mediation, and OJJDP gang prevention and intervention courses.
STVIP partnered with The San Bernardino Gang and Drug Task Force, Young Visionaries Youth Leadership organization and other regional Inland Empire Violence Prevention agencies to insure a successful, evidence-based outcome.
LOCAL SUPPORT FROM AREA FUNDERS
The (3) year grant is part of a $484000.00 project that required a match from other funding sources and charities as a shared community investment. Agencies from three counties including San Bernardino, Riverside and Los Angeles contributed to the effort.
“The hope was that other funding agencies would step up and help to fund this critical project which is so vital for our children” stated Margaret Hill, Assistant Superintendent of San Bernardino County Schools. We definitely want to thank Tammy Tumbling and Ed Robinson of Southern California Edison.
It is important to see one community-based agency supporting another, especially during these trying times. They are truly working together with integrity for the betterment of the community, said one attendee.
STVIP would like to thank James Ramos and the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians for donating $186,000, along with Southern California Edison, for a $10,000.00 donation to this important project.
