Well the African American Social Calendar/Dinner Season is upon us.
It kicked off with The Brotherhood Crusade this past weekend. Coming up is Reverend Jesse Jackson's Birthday Celebration, followed by the always excellent Kappa Alpha Psi Black and White Ball and then the Link's Cotillion right after Thanksgiving (I never understand how those young ladies can fit in those dresses after Thanksgiving... That is just torture).
Right after all of the bells and balls we move into the holiday season (can you believe we are celebrating Thanksgiving and Christmas already?). We will be bombarded with 100 Black Men, and New Frontier Democratic Club Christmas parties, office festivities and the annual Sentinel Departments Cook Off. Well the reason why I am discussing all of this is so in the midst of all of the celebrating we don't lose sight of the real issues. At every one of these events someone will be there soliciting people to donate food for Thanksgiving or provide sponsorship for a girl, boy or senior citizen for Christmas. And while we will be out celebrating and wearing those very expensive outfits, eating those okay dinners, and drinking fabulous wine remember there are people out there a lot less fortunate than we are that need our help.
So, Please take a moment and sign up with Mothers In Action (you can sign up here at the Sentinel), or via Brotherhood Crusade, or your own fraternity or sorority, your church or whatever community organization you belong to and GIVE. In these challenging economic times, we all still have a responsibility to give back, to do whatever we can. Be it $5 or $5,000, it is the giving that matters. If you go grocery shopping and they give you that free turkey, because you just spent $100.00 take that turkey and give it to someone else (you know you are not going to cook or eat anything but a Butterball Turkey) don't sit it in the freezer for later which later never happens.
Remember this is the time and the season to give, to share and to care so all I am asking is that you spend some time living up to the things we talk about all year long and provide the services that every one of our organizations was founded for. SERVICE to others over self.
So, whether you agree or disagree, now more than ever I really need your input. I need to hear from you. I need to know what is going on in our community. I also need to know what other stories we need to tell, and what is on your mind. I really do want to hear from you, I want you to "Talk to Danny."
God Bless You,
