Hundreds of security officers in Los Angeles will walk off the job today in support of their fellow officers up north who are fighting for better health benefits from their employer Inter Con. In Los Angeles, officers will stand in front of Kaiser Sunset. Picket lines will begin at 8 a.m. according to spokesperson, Jennifer Kelly. A rally and march will follow.

In Oakland and Sacramento, strikers began gathering in front of Kaiser Permanente medical centers May 6 to protest what they are calling The medical giant’s “use of heavy handed tactics to prevent officers from forming a union.”

The complaints cited Inter-Con’s use of spying, threats, intimidation and retaliation against officers. Though no numbers were given to determine the economic effect of the strike, Inter-Con will have to provide officers to replace the ones not on the job, Kelly said.

“Inter-Con workers deserve to have what other union workers in Kaiser facilities have,” said security officer union president, Faith Culbreath.

“That is better wages, paid time off and quality health care. These things are not a privilege, they are a right.”

“It’s clear that Inter-Con has repeatedly committed unfair labor practices in violation of the law,” said Orrin Baird, associate general counsel for SEIU. “That’s the whole basis of this strike-workers’ civil rights have been violated.”

“Inter-Con has broken the law,” Kelly added.

Los Angeles officers will strike in front of Kaiser facilities in their area along with officers in San Fernando Valley and Anaheim.
