At next month’s Taste of Soul, there will be plenty of delicious food to try out, so in the weeks beforehand several vendors will be highlighted as they offer the Sentinel samples of what they’ll have for you on October 18. “The J Spot” promises healthy food but it’s also tasty as well. They brought in ribs, shrimp, oven-fried chicken and other samples from their location at Manchester Blvd. and Aviation Blvd. The ribs, which are marinated for 24 hours, were easily the best dish of the day as everyone not only licked their fingers but also loved how the meat fell so tenderly off the bones. The shrimp was equally delicious, aided by a light “cool-down sauce,” while the cornbread tasted like a light pound cake—not too sweet, but still big on flavor. For the health-conscious, there was asparagus soup and mango salsa that got praise from those who tried it. “The J Spot,” owned by comedian J. Anthony Brown, is definitely a vendor you need to visit at Taste of Soul just for a taste of the diversity that will be offered on October 18. If you’re a fan of gumbo, then stop by the booth of Phillip Shaw where he’s got some of the best this side of the Mississippi. Now personally, this writer is a bit biased when it comes to one of New Orleans’ signature dishes. When you’ve tasted it so long from the hands of a New Orleans native, you don’t just trust anybody who says, “Taste my gumbo.” But Shaw’s recipe will take you back to Bourbon Street and throughout the city. The flavors are rich and the various meats and seafood will have you clamoring for more. All you need to know is that at 4 p.m., the tray was brought in and by 5 p.m., it had been picked clean by the staff here. Throw in some bite-sized cornbread muffins on the side and you have a dish well worth the price. For those who like a little bit of everything, Marisha Morris’ Done Beautifully has a recipe for you. Morris learned how to cook from her grandmother, who brought her recipes from Myra, Louisiana. Morris’ signature dish is the Sweet Smokin’ Heat Wings & Fries. Morris takes a healthy approach with this dish. She bakes the wings and deep-fries the French fries in olive oil. Morris is also creative with her dishes. Her scallops with mango dressing is an original idea. Do not pass up on her desserts either. Her pastries and chocolates are made daily. Last update: 09-25-2008 00:09
