Tis The Season To Be Jolly. But it’s also the season to be proactive and make a difference in our community. We have to begin to take control of our own destiny. How many of you are planning to give books, book gift cards, etc. to members of your family? Start with going shopping at ESO WON Books in Leimert Park or some of the fine African American owned retail outlets nearby. Make a commitment and explain this commitment to your children, that we as a people must make a concerted effort to patronize and support other Black owned businesses.

I live in the Inland Empire, but I personally have made a commitment to do a large part of my Christmas shopping either with Leimert Park or with an African American business, in Los Angeles, the Inland Empire, the OC, or online.

This commitment is how we as a people will progress, this is how we demonstrate our commitment not only in words, but in actions. Sometimes it is the little things that mean the most. I am challenging all of our subscribers and every reader of the Sentinel to go the extra mile.

I also want to challenge you to share your joy of the Sentinel with others, give the gift of the Black Press to others and share the importance of the Black media to others as well. That is why I am offering a buy one, get one free subscription deal to anyone who subscribes to the Sentinel in the month of December. This is my gift to you to give to others. Let your nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family members know that it is important to not only talk about your commitment to our community but also demonstrate your commitment by purchasing a subscription. The power of the press is an amazing thing and if Black people don’t support the Black press who will?

So, whether you agree or disagree, now more than ever I really need your input. I need to hear from you. I need to know what is going on in our community. I also need to know what other stories we need to tell, and what is on your mind. I really do want to hear from you, I want you to “Talk to Danny.”

Sincerely,
Danny J. Bakewell, Jr.
