073108_bob_johnsonOne of Los Angeles’ most Beloved Business Leaders

Relatives and friends of one of Los Angeles’ most successful Black businessmen are still reeling in shock and dismay this week after learning that long-time McDonald’s franchise owner Bob Johnson was killed when his three-wheel motorcycle was struck from behind on July 25 in Las Vegas. He was 60 years old.

According to the only published report of the incident, Johnson was hit from behind by a 1998 Nissan Maxima driven by 33-year-old Modesto Lopez-Hernandez of Las Vegas and jolted Mr. Johnson into oncoming traffic. His body was identified by Clark County corner’s office two days later.

Lopez has since been arrested and charged with felony driving under the influenced and was being held on bail pending a court appearance this week.

Friends and relatives of Johnson were gathered in private at his two estates in the Southland and refused to provide any comments on the death. No funeral arrangements have been made available, and even those who closely admired the man did not wish to make any statements about him.

Johnson’s daughter and son arrived in Los Angeles this week, but were unavailable for comment.

Johnson was enormously successful in real estate and for 25 years owned several Mc Donald’s franchises, including one located at LAX.

In 2006, he filed a lawsuit against the fast food giant for $11 million and was recently awarded a settlement in that case.

A former Postal Services employee, Johnson was very private and low key although he owned several homes in Los Angeles and had just finishing building another home in Henderson, NV.

He was also quite generous, donating to various charitable organizations and hiring minorities for his fast food establishments.

“We’ve lost another American business leader, who was very important to the growth and development of Black enterprise in greater Los Angeles area and he will be missed,” said Earl “Skip” Cooper, president and CEO of Black Business Association.

Please take an English course. You mispelled so many words, it's embarrasing to our race. Don't know how you were hired. That says something about the paper.

I believe that someone else re-writes the article for the writer so it can be put on the internet. This is a great writer and a very well respected journalist who has been around for a while. If you had been reading the paper before now, then you would know that. I guess that says a lot about YOU.

First of all, Kenneth, there was only one misspelled word in the article. Maybe you need to take an English Course!!! Or at least get out your dictionary!
Second, why are you grousing about misspelled words when such a tragedy happened to our people? We should be focused on comforting the family as well as seeing that justice is done in the form of proper punishment for Lopez. Instead of felony drunk driving, this person should be charged with felony manslaughter and be put away for a very long time. He took a life that has touched hundreds of people and contributed much to not only his race, but to the community and country in general.

Sorry I misread the name of the writer of this comment. I should be addressing myself to Thomas, not Kenneth Miller.

Individuals may not be aware of this, but even the most respected publications have frequent online spelling or typo challenges, due in part to the way this technology works.

Even though the articles are not necessarily re-written as suggested by Steve W, his overall assertion of Mr. Miller's reputation is correct. Additionally, there are a few layers between the author and the web team that make it possible for errors to occur - which in some cases have nothing to do with an authors original content.

Despite our best efforts to prevent these situations, errors will almost certainly occur. Hopefully our readers would be kind enough to bring it to our attention so any corrections can be made.

Annette Lockett-

First of all, the mispelled words are:
CORNER'S(should be coroner's) INFLUENCED (should be influence in the context) FRANCHISE (should be franchises in the context)
FINISHING (should be finished in the context)

Second, I guess YOU need to take a course.

And finally, you're right in saying I shouldn't focus on spelling errors.

To Steve W & Peris-

Thanks for the lesson on the layers of writers and editors involved, and I do periodically see errors in articles, but
the errors I pointed out above are quite serious. Those errors shouldn't have made it to print, period!!!

AND I'M VERY HURT ABOUT BOB JOHNSON.

It is pathetic that you two are publicly attacking each other. the article is not about YOU, it's about Bob Johnson. Come on give me a break! Do the right thing and pour out your condolences and sympathy to the family.

Take your attacks to a private forum!

ITS CRAZY THAT THIS ARTICLE IS ABOUT MR. BOB JOHNSON, AND WE HAVE THOSE WHO CARE MORE ABOUT THE ALPHABET AND HOW IT'S SPELL ON AN INTERNET PAGE, RATHER THAN THE ARTICLE AT HAND. PLEASE RESPECT MR. JOHNSON AND NOT THE ALPHABET.
I would like to send out my prayers to the family. Bobby was like a uncle to me. I've known him since I was about 8 years old. This is huge lost to our community. As a child I admired him for his hard work and dedication. Not only for what he had accomplished, but for always being someone I could look up to. He has employed so many of our black residence in many neighborhood's when other employer's wouldn't. He's given so many opportunities to those who needed to support their kids by his franchise. Mr. Johnson was a VERY smart business man who had so much to offer to the world. He will never be forgotten and always loved. GOD BLESS HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS. I still can't believe it. My heart has been hurt by such a tragic killing. He didn't deserve to be killed. This man ALWAYS had a smile on his face, and a kind word in his heart. I always was motivated after talking with him to strive for the best. And he always would let you know that you could accomplish ANYTHING in the world you set your heart to. GOD BLESS YOU BOBBY! WE LOVE YOU ALWAYS!

Bobby Johnson is a good human being who will be missed in Los Angeles. He is an example of a guy from Mississippi who came to Los Angeles with a down south, honest, work ethic and became very successful in the big city.

Hey Thomas,

To show you how God don't like ugly - you misspelled "mispelled". Get your own spelling in order before you criticize somebody else. It REALLY makes you stupid.

Get a life.

You're pathetic for focusing on that subject at this late stage in the posted comments. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT MR. JOHNSON?

YOU GET A LIFE IGNORAMOUS!!!

I did not notice any misspelled words and I have a Masters Degree. So I ran a spell check- not one error. Now I wonder who is embarrasing our race?

I have been on vacation and only just today, on my return, learned of the Bob's death. Can anyone give me details of where he is buried and his mother's phone number?
Thanks
Mata
