CNS--Two Hispanic gang members convicted of stabbing two Black men in the back in a racially motivated attack in El Monte last year were sentenced last Thursday to lengthy prison terms. Pomona Superior Court Judge Bruce Marrs ordered Jonathan Joseph Carrion, 21, to serve 79 years to life in prison, while co-defendant Bobby Miguel Perez, 23, was sentenced to 44 years and four months behind bars. Carrion and Perez were convicted Aug. 1 of attempted murder--along with hate crime and gang allegations--for attacking the two men on June 16, 2007, as they walked in the 11900 block of Elliott Avenue.

The pair also were convicted of assault charges involving a Hispanic man and a White man, who were walking with the two Black men and were beaten. The victims were confronted by a number of people in a sport-utility vehicle-- Carrion and Perez among them--who called out their gang name and yelled racial epithets at them before the attack, according to Deputy District Attorney John Allen Ramseyer.

"There was no reason to attack them but for the color of their skin," the prosecutor said. "This is a crime based solely on hatred."

Authorities believe at least three to five other people were involved in the attack. Carrion and Perez, who were described as members of an El Monte gang, are the only suspects identified, detained and prosecuted so far in connection with the crime.

The two "Mongo cucumber punks" received a just sentence. Hopefully with no parole. Gang members are known to have the "brain size of an ameba."

Mr. Edwards no disrespect but before you make comments like you did you should really find out all the facts. This case was conducted unfairly and because of that Mr. Carrion was not granted a fair trial. I attended court every single day of Mr. Carrions trial and as a Criminal Justice major I know for a fact that this case should have either received a mistrial or it should've got thrown out. The victims of the crime couldn't even point out Mr. Carrion. And when they were asked to describe their attacker they described a man with the letters EMF on his face. And as shown in the courtroom Mr. Carrion has no such tattoo. Even the playback of the 911 call described the men in the vehicle as 5 to 7 youngsters. When the dispatch operator asked for their meaning of youngsters the man gave a range in the higher teens. Mr. Carrion could not pull off that young of an age. Mr. Carrion even had some of his very closest friends come up and testify on his behalf. These close friends of his are African-American. So how could he be a racist if his closest friends are African-American? The El Monte PD and the DA has created a very monster like perception of Mr. Carrion and they have no evidence proving their case. All the evidence that the DA provided was on Mr. Perez, so what I'm confused about is how Det. Batres was able to conclude that Mr. Carrion was the leader of the pack when no evidence even put him in the location of the crime?? Det. Batres just made this case very personal which in my opinion is very unprofessional. But then again he wasn't able to catch Mr. Carrion's father so might as well get him right? Although Mr. Carrion was convicted of a crime in in 2006 people do change for the better. I mean Mr. Carrion's father changed his life completely around. Justice will prevail in time I mean if the DA did such a excellent job they wouldn't have admitted that they sentenced Mr. Carrion too much time when they brought back down to LA County back in January of 2009.
