CNS - More than 500 volunteers spent part of Martin Luther King Day today helping to refurbish an elementary school in Gardena.

Workers from Home Depot, L.A. Works and the South Los Angeles and Gardena communities joined forces for the Hands on Schools project at 135th Street Elementary School, painting murals and creating green spaces at a campus that never had any before. The school was built nearly 60 years ago.

The project is one of more than 50 projects carried out by Points of Light & Hands On Network affiliates as part of Martin Luther King Day.

“Today’s event demonstrates how members of a community, be they individuals, members of organizations or large companies such as the Home Depot, can work together to improve a neighborhood,” said Kathryn Gallagher, senior manager of communications for Home Depot’s western division.
