Watts Towers Arts Center and the Charles Mingus Youth Arts Center Exhibition
Los Angeles--The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) and the Friends of the Watts Towers Arts Center are pleased to announce the opening of Wisdom Knots & Other Symbols: An exhibition of Monoprints created in 2006 by award winning artist and illustrator, Varnette P. Honeywood. The exhibition, curated by CCH Pounder runs from now through August 15, with an Artist Reception on Sunday, February 7 at 1:30 P.M. in the Noah Purifoy Gallery, Watts Towers Arts Center.
Born in Watts, Varnette P. Honeywood's artistic journey began in Watts in 1966 with the Watts Chalk-In. Much of her art concerns the history of African Americans, celebrates the strength and leadership of Black women and fulfills one of her major goals--to create positive visual arts programs for children of color and their teachers. Millions of television viewers saw her art on the walls of The Cosby Show and A Different World. During the 1990's, Honeywood illustrated, Little Bill Books for Beginning Readers, by Bill Cosby for which she was nominated for an NAACP Image Award.
In the 1980's, Honeywood and her sister Stephanie began to create and use New Adinkra Symbols, incorporating both the design of some Nigerian fabric and Adinkra symbols on cloth from Ghana into her work. In 1990 Honeywood, while continuing to paint and collage, began working with monoprinting--using ink as paint and manipulating it with chemicals and tools on Plexiglas and transferring it to paper to create an original print. "Adinkra Quilts," an exhibition of her watercolors and monoprints, was featured at the Los Angeles Museum of African American Art in 1994.
Honeywood has contributed to several exhibitions at the Watts Towers Arts Center, including the recent, 'Watts Towers 50 Years Inspiring Art' and, in 2003, 'Spirits of the Ancestors', in which master artists from Watts used shovels as their canvas to acknowledge and pay homage to the ancestors of the community.
The Watts Towers Arts Center & Charles Mingus Youth Arts Center will hold classes for young people in Printmaking, Quilting, Storytelling and Ghanaian Drumming as part of the powerful exhibition, Wisdom Knots & Other Symbols.
A complimentary exhibition.... & OTHER SYMBOLS: Works In Progress, Curator: Rosie Lee Hooks will be in the Charles Mingus Youth Arts Center, Mingus Gallery showcasing the work from these classes.
Gallery Hours: Wednesday--Saturday 10 a.m.--4 p.m., Sunday 12 p.m.--4 p.m.
Admission is free for both exhibitions.
