Wesson Hosts Celebration of Holden Bust Unveiling

The Nate Holden Performing Arts Center (NHPAC) was the scene for the unveiling ceremony celebrating the new bust of former Councilmember Nate Holden adorning the NHPAC's atrium.
Sponsored by Councilmember Herb Wesson, the event featured Congresswoman Diane Watson who joined Wesson and Ebony Repertory Theatre Founder/Producer Wren Brown in recalling and praising Holden's important contribution in preserving the site for the state-of-the-art cultural center and advocating its construction. A wide array of community residents and stakeholders also joined in the celebration.
The bronze bust was the creation of the distinguished artist and sculptor Nijel Binns, who is perhaps best known locally for his enormous "Mother of Humanity" monument in Watts on the grounds of the Watts Labor Community Action Committee.
Councilmember Wesson noted that it was Holden's tenacious commitment that enabled the performing arts center project to move forward to completion. "This beautiful sculpture is a great tribute. We, the community, owe Nate a tremendous debt of gratitude for his work. Without him, it would never have happened," said Wesson.
Constructed in 2003, the NHPAC is currently the home of the Ebony Repertory Theatre (ERT), a newly formed Equity company, which is also the operator of the 400-seat facility. For the past year, the ERT has successfully brought diverse professional performing arts to the Mid-City Community and greater Los Angeles, making the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center Los Angeles's newest cultural destination.
