I don’t want to seem to insensitive regarding world politics and issues. And I really do feel the pain and will continue to pray for those people who were devastated in the cyclones of Myanmar. However when I woke up this morning and heard the news and the president discussing sending aid to rescue those devastated by this horrific tragedy I could not help to feel a little sick.

I travel almost every month to the city of New Orleans and let me tell you. For those of you who have not gone been back to New Orleans since “The Storm”, New Orleans is NOT back. People are still living in trailers (if they previously owned there home), living with friends and family or living under the freeway over passes. While the French Quarters is up and running and the Super Dome is hosting national championships and the Hornet Arena might even be ready to host the NBA Championship, there are still hundreds of thousands of New Orleanians, most of them black who still have not come home.

So how do we as a country, no matter how blessed we are, no matter how rich we are do we pay attention to other peoples households, before we take care of our own. Is it because African American citizens of these United States are less important than citizens in other countries?

I understand our roll as the peace keepers of the world and I think the USA should accept that responsibility, but I cannot accept that while there are American citizens fighting and struggling to survive a tragedy that we at a minimum dropped the ball on as a country, and more likely decided not to even try and catch the ball on.

Again, I say that I am fine with the idea of helping others, but I strongly believe that you can never take care of others, before you take care of your home. We have millions (if not billions) to take care of the rest of the world but we can and never should take care of others while your own house is dying.

So I say to all of the elected officials, George Bush. We must take care of US. We must take care of our own, because if our own house isn’t clean how can we ever clean someone else house.

Sorry Myanmar, but we still have our own storm to recover from.

So, whether you agree or disagree, now more than ever I really need your input. I need to hear from you. I need to know what is going on in our community. I also need to know what other stories we need to tell, and what is on your mind. I really do want to hear from you, I want you to “Talk to Danny.”
