Words for the Week: The Wonderful Name of Jesus

Scripture: St Mark 16:17-18
This season of Advent brings to the foreground of our thoughts the entrance of Jesus, the Christ, onto the world stage. We consider the meaning, impact, and message of the mangered baby born under a celestial miracle. We also take time to contemplate what His life and ministry means on a personal level.
Inarguable is the effect of Jesus Christ on the history of the human race. The name of Jesus has outstripped the heroic stature of any that came before Him or after. More than a world leader, peace advocate, or spiritual teacher, Jesus name has won the hearts of billions the world over.
Jesus is revered not only for the virtuous nature of His character, but also for the mystical affect of His Name. H.G. Wells solidifies my claim by saying, "I am an historian, I am not a believer, but I must confess as a historian that this penniless preacher from Nazareth is irrevocably the very center of history. Jesus Christ is easily the most dominant figure in all history."
No other figure is so loved like Jesus. However, this fact would bear little consequence had it not been for the mystical, spiritual power of His name. No other name under heaven has been responsible for physical healings, whole life sustainable transformation, and driving out the power of demons except the name of Jesus.
Some people utilize the name of Jesus as a defensive weapon against perceived spiritual attack while others gain personal strength and power from the use of His name. Apparently, the authority in His name can not be faked. One must be connected, leagued, and locked in with Jesus in order to utilize the influence of His name.
Such an ability to influence physical outcomes by spiritual means is the right of all who carry the name of Jesus Christ in them. This gifting, this impartation to you from the Holy Spirit is made evident to serve others. 1 Corinthians 12:7 & 11 states, "The Spirit has given each of us a special way of serving others... But it is the Spirit who does all this and decides which gifts to give to each of us."
Therefore, in the worship service, we are charged to be mindful to the presence of those who may not understand and are therefore closed to the possibility of supernatural impartation. The agent that keeps the visitor from thinking we are "crazy," opening his heart to Jesus Christ is our orderly conduct and the love with which we express the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
The fact is the lame walk on a fairly regular basis in the church. The deaf ear is opened. Moreover, the demonic forces are commanded and expected to leave individuals quite regularly. However, such activity is not regular in the world. The world seeks the guidance of professional counselors, doctors, and the like because they are completely unfamiliar with and therefore have no faith in the influence of the name of Jesus.
As we hasten toward to history's closing hours we should also return to a resolute sense of the awesome power of the name of Jesus. Not only should we press in to the character of Jesus as an influencer of our daily decisions, but also of our health and spiritual well-being. While we recognize with great clarity the effects of Jesus personality on the human historical front evident in the dedication that men have exhibited toward him, we are also aware that He is much more.
He promised to be with us to the end of the age. He is indeed with us because the power of His name is still as effective as He promised it would be to those who believe.
