Police: 5 Shot Dead Outside Nairobi Hotel

AP - Police and witnesses say a shootout outside a Holiday Inn in Kenya’s capital has killed five people.

Charles Owino, deputy spokesman for the Kenyan police, says two of those killed were hotel employees who were caught in the crossfire. But a witness, John Wanyonyi, says the two worked at a casino next door.

Owino says the other victims were suspected robbers.

A man who answered the phone at the Holiday Inn would not comment.

17 Die in Stampede at Graduation Ceremony in Sudan

AP - Sudanese police say a stampede among crowds of people attending a military graduation ceremony killed 17 people and injured three dozen others.

Police say most of the dead in Sunday’s stampede were women and children. It was not clear what caused the crowds to rush toward the gates of the al-Merriekh Stadium in Omdurman, the twin city of Sudan’s capital, Khartoum.

Police said Monday that 36 people were injured in the stampede and were taken to Omdurman Hospital. Most of them left the hospital after receiving treatment.
