Danny, How about challenging the city to bring back the Teen Post Program? I grew up in such an atomsphere . I still feel it was one of the most important experiences in my community life for a teenager. I experienced the following good things.
I had someone outside of the family who I could talk to about my issues. I was able to get the support of a couple of wonderful "Big Brothers" who influenced me to go to college. I was educated about those things a young black male should know about in terms of male resonsibility towards a female including how to protect on self by sex education.
The community was able to lower crime because then Teenagers had a place to go to report on crime as well outlets for such misplaced behaviors. In terms of education, dropouts as well as convicts were encouraged to find an appropriate path for their social recovery and sometimes taken by staff to those site areas for program initiation. Remember sometimes people are just plain scared to face instutions, and with the teen Post staff there to soften the reality of change, many otherwise lost men and women were returned to a functional role in the community.
I could write tomes about the fine work of the Teen Post in steering young males and females into positive directions in the various communities of which make up Los Angeles. I trust you will take a couple of minutes to perhaps ask around or google the online information relating to the Teen Post Program.
