I agree with you Kamau, about the need for culture-tailored activities.  
 
The problem, in my opinion, is that most students are discouraged early on from the point of view with which Africans are treated in history books, and in the minds of many educators. History books treat Africans as victims, thereby giving students nothing to feel good about or HOPE for. Early African civilizations aren't given credit. Slavery is misrepresented as a burden to African Amerioans when it has really made us stronger. Books also fail to mention the fruitful history between Africans and Mexicans.  
 
Also, school is no longer practical - and African Americans are a practical people. Taxes, real estate, computer science and business sciences aren't taught, primarily because the teachers with training won't accept LAUSD pay.  
 
The Los Angeles Urban League has been promoting solutions. They are taking care of Crenshaw, where my sister was a student. PLEASE DONATE or join
