Holman United Methodist Church

Since 1945, Holman has been a church the African American community could call home.

Holman United Methodist Church (HUMC) is a church anybody could call home. That was the very reason the church came into being in 1945. It was started by a small group of people who wanted to create a place of worship for any and everybody. It has grown to have many members from surrounding communities in the Crenshaw, South and Greater L.A. areas.

It had a humble beginning as other denominational churches and venues played host to HUMC. Reverend J.L. Jones, who was an ex-army chaplain served as its first appointed minister. Over the years, the congregation would grow and eventually purchase a building in 1947 on the corner of Cimarron and Jefferson. There Rev. Laneau L. White was appointed their first permanent minister and they officially name the church Holman Methodist Church.

HUMC continued to grow and eventually purchased the Pepperdine Mansion at 3320 West Adams Blvd. The church would add new additions to their church home over the coming years, transforming it into the beautiful sanctuary it is now. HUMC would also start and implement programs to help edify, uplift and educate the surrounding communities.

Rev. Kelvin Sauls serves as the current senior pastor of HUMC. The church offers alternative worship opportunities, discipleship classes, health and safety programs, which are among the standard ministry it carries to this day.

HUMC outlines their goals as helping the Los Angeles community and surrounding areas become disciples for Jesus Christ. Their goals state that HUMC will also:

-reach a greater number of unchurched people while enlarging their ministries to all family units with the power of the gospel of Christ.

-appropriate the wisdom, traditions and energy within their church to partner with others in the community to promote social service delivery, healing, justice, and economic development.

-increase opportunities for spiritual growth and development within their church and community.

-grow and expand their financial resources and human resources to sustain and expand their growing ministries.

-enhance their ability to be a "teaching" congregation.
