Council President Herb Wesson addresses community activists and leaders recently, at the 10th Council District Women's Steering Committee at the 38th Annual installation luncheon
City Council President Herb Wesson addressed over 400 community activist and leaders who attended the 10th Council District Women’s Steering Committee at their 38th Annual installation luncheon at the Proud Bird Restaurant.
“I want to express my appreciation for the leadership of outgoing President Joann Fleming, and welcome incoming President Connye Thomas, who I know will continue the committee’s tradition of outstanding public service,” said Wesson.
Since it’s founding in the 1970s, the committee has been dedicated to improving the community through public service, education, and leadership development.
Their annual scholarship drives have raised thousands to enable high school students to attend college. Their grassroots activities have included providing Thanksgiving turkeys for families in need, and annual toy distributions for at-risk kids during the holiday season.
Former Supervisor Yvonne Burke was the keynote speaker, and luncheon honorees included Congresswoman Maxine Waters, a founder of the organization, Jimmie Woods Gray, and Wyomia Tyus. Their new incoming officers were sworn-in by Judge Patricia Titus.
Also attending the event were newly elected 59th Assembly District Assemblyman Reginald Jones-Sawyer, former 10th District Councilman David Cunningham, also a founder of the organization, and former Inglewood Councilman Danny Tabor.
