As Dr. E. Wayne Gaddis, Sr., begins a four-year term as president of the California Missionary Baptist State Convention (CMBSC), his focus is on unity and progress.

"One of my greatest desires as president is to build a stronger leadership in our churches throughout the state of California and to bring us together as one. I accept this office with great honor," said Dr. Gaddis, who serves as pastor of Greater True Light Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles.

"This is our 90th year and the Lord is really blessing us. I'm standing on the shoulders of the four preceding CMBSC presidents to be able to carry our convention to another level."

The CMBSC Winter Board Meeting is currently underway at the Sheraton Gateway Hotel near LAX. The theme of the conference, which began January 24, is ‘Respecting the Past, Responding to the Present, Reaching toward the Future.'

Hundreds of people from throughout the state are participating in the convention. In addition to business sessions and auxiliary meetings, the agenda includes a Leadership Summit and ‘Bridging the Gap' multi-generational classes.

Earlier this week, recording artist Beverly Crawford ministered through song on January 24 and Bishop Kenneth C. Ulmer kicked off the Pre-Installation Service on January 25.

"On Thursday, January 26, at 1 p.m., we will hold our first-ever session aimed at bridging the gap between baby boomers and generations X and Y. We want youth and young adults to know that there's a place for them in the church. Our speaker will be Rev. Michael J. T. Fisher, the dynamic, young pastor of Greater Zion Church Family in Compton," Dr. Gaddis said.

The official Installation Service takes place on Thursday at 7 p.m. The Rev. Dr. Freddie Haynes, senior pastor of Friendship-West Baptist Church in Dallas, TX, will be the guest preacher and perform the ceremony.

Activities on Friday, January 27, include a Jubilee Service at 8 a.m., with Pastor Dale Sanders of Fifth African Baptist Church in New Orleans, LA.

Following the convention, Dr. Gaddis will move to implement his vision of CMBSC unity and progress in six important areas.

"My six pillars emphasize cooperative effort, stronger auxiliaries, and meaningful ministry. We will build Generations X, Y and Baby Boomers by providing training to 20 to 50 year olds, hold regular Ministers' Conferences with teaching from all pastors, and revive the CMBSC Scholarship Fund to allow us to make annual awards to one recipient per district," he said.

"I want to bring us together in oneness to be able to make all of this happen. As Jesus prayed in John 17, ‘Lord, make them as one as we are one,' I want us to be ‘as one' so that we are able to achieve these goals."
