Congressional Black Caucus Chair Marcia Fudge’s Statement on the Rosa Parks Statue and Unveiling Ceremony

WASHINGTON, DC (Link) – Congressional Black Caucus Chair Marcia L. Fudge released the following statement on the Rosa Parks statue unveiling ceremony held today in the United States Capitol:

“Today we honor the legacy of Rosa Parks, the ‘first lady of civil rights’, for her strength, resilience and commitment to equality and justice. As the first African American woman to be honored in Statuary Hall of the United States Capitol, Mrs. Parks’ dedication to ensuring no human being is treated like a second class citizen in this country will be remembered and discussed for generations to come.

“How ironic that on the same day we honor Mrs. Parks in our nation’s Capital, right across the street the United States Supreme Court hears arguments on whether or not Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act is still relevant and necessary. This is the very core of the cause to which Mrs. Parks devoted her life and it is once again being questioned.

“I thank President Obama, Senate Majority Leader Reid, Senate Minority Leader McConnell, Speaker Boehner, Leader Pelosi, and Assistant Leader Clyburn for their remarks today and I am grateful to Mrs. Parks for her contributions to our country.

“As the statue of Mrs. Parks will remind every person who walks through the halls of the U.S. Capitol, the sacrifices and the fight to secure civil rights in this country are far from over.”
