How to Live a Longer & Happier Life: A Roadmap to Good Health
Dr. Donald Henderson, M.D., M.P.H.
DO AS I SAY
Physicians are funny people. Most physicians are sensitive, smart, caring and giving persons. They on a daily basis give good health information to patients. Yet , a great many doctors fail to follow their own advice.
This week as I shared a meal with three of my physician friends the issues of health screening came front and center. The discussion at first centered on the fact that each of us were in the process of losing weight. We talked about our early success in shedding extra pounds. We each professed new knowledge as to how to avoid hidden calories. Yet, when we discussed health screening for colon cancer and prostate cancer the conversation became quiet.
With each moment of silence the picture became clearer. Two of our physicians at the table had never had screening for colon cancer or prostate cancer. I was shocked. I was dismayed.
Everyone knows that minority populations have a higher rate of cancer occurrence as well as a record of poor out comes form cancer treatment. Everyone knows that the reason for the poor treatment outcomes is the delay in making the cancer diagnosis. Everyone knows that heath screening help to find cancer in the easier to treat early stages.
MONEY AND EDUCATION DO NOT TRUMP FEAR AND IGNORANCE
I was enraged by the possibility that my friends could die and there by cheat me out of the pleasure of their company. So, I shouted four letter words at them. I expressed the fact that the loss of their brain power and dedication to service would cause harm to our community. I used every trick I know to shame
Did they hear me? They know who they are and they read this paper. If I could, I would give you their names.
If your family members and friends are important to you tell them the following.
•Lose 10% of your current weight
•Get a pap smear and mammogram
•At age 45 or earlier, get a colonoscopy
•Get screened for prostate cancer
•Check for blood pressure
•Check your cholesterol
