DCH Teen Safe Driving Foundation Announces the Winner of its D3CA Contest

The DCH Teen Safe Driving Foundation announced the winner of the Don’t Drive Distracted California (D3CA) teen safe driving awareness campaign contest during an awards ceremony held on March 3, at DCH Toyota of Torrance.  After an extensive registration period, stage one campaign idea submission phase, public voting process and final submission phase, the winner is Dominique Murray, a senior from El Camino High School and an active participant in the Brotherhood Crusade Youth Development Program. The award ceremony announcing Dominique celebrated the conclusion of the D3CA contest and honored all ten finalists for their hard work.

 Dominique’s campaign “LOL When I Avail: No Texting Friends until the Driving Ends” was selected by the D3CA panel of independent judges as the entry that would best raise awareness about the dangers young drivers face when behind the wheel of a car. He created the campaign while working with Brotherhood Crusade to develop a comprehensive peer-focused solution to address teen driver safety.  Dominique and Brotherhood Crusade were working to develop Dominique’s idea when the D3CA opportunity was presented.   DCH Teen Safe Driving Foundation’s D3CA campaign combined with DCH’s commitment to this effort created the perfect platform for Dominique’s vision.

"I am extremely grateful to the DCH Teen Safe Driving Foundation for this award," said Dominique. "However, I am more impressed with DCH. They are truly committed to the communities they serve!"

As the grand prizewinner, Dominique was given a choice of either a new car or college scholarship. He chose the scholarship.

“LOL When I Avail” was chosen out of nine other finalist submissions. The campaign will next be produced and distributed by a grant from the DCH Teen Safe Driving Foundation.

“Dominique’s campaign connects with teens and highlights a real problem: texting and driving,” said Roy Bavaro, executive director of the DCH Teen Safe Driving Foundation. “We can’t wait for people to see this wonderful idea.”

Eight of the ten finalists received a $100 runner up prize.  Kevin Casasola of Chaparall High School, the second place finalist, received a $1000 college scholarship.

“All of our finalists presented excellent safe driving campaign ideas,” said Susan Scarola, president of the DCH Teen Safe Driving Foundation. “They rose to the challenge of D3CA and delivered some truly dynamic campaigns.”

D3CA is a teen safe driving awareness campaign and contest for high school students. Students from across California registered to compete in the competition to bring awareness to the dangers of distracted driving.
