Newly elected Chair of the California Science Center Board of Directors Fabian Wesson and State Senator Roderick Wright enjoy the evening in front of an Area-51 themed cocktail reception. Later, Discovery Ball festivities included a “Tron” inspired, futuristic nightclub, and a private IMAX screening of “Hubble 3D.”

Danny Bakewell, his wife Aline Bakewell, California Science Center Director Edna Anderson-Owens and her husband Curtis Owens take in the 15th annual Discovery Ball, where guests were welcomed with an ambiance reminiscent of the year 1961. Nearly 850 guests celebrated “Space Exploration: Past, Present and Future” throughout the evening.

Los Angeles Lakers alumnus Norm Nixon, renowned actress and choreographer Debbie Allen, and California Science Center Senior Vice President of Development and Marketing William Harris enjoy dinner under the wings of Space Shuttle Endeavour in the Samuel Oschin Pavilion.

State Controller John Chiang, State Assemblymember Reginald Jones-Sawyer, and California Science Center President and CEO Jeffrey Rudolph begin their night at the record-breaking 15th annual Discovery Ball, which raised more than $1.5 million to benefit the California Science Center Foundation. As part of the festivities, guests previewed “Mission 26: The Big Endeavour” a photographic exhibition which opened on Monday, March 11. 

On Saturday, March 9, at the California Science Center’s 15th annual Discovery Ball, nearly 850 guests celebrated “Space Exploration: Past, Present and Future.” As part of the festivities, guests previewed “Mission 26: The Big Endeavour” a photographic exhibition which opened on Monday, March 11, and dined under the wings of Space Shuttle Endeavour in the Samuel Oschin Pavilion.

The annual black-tie gala, a philanthropic event, raised nearly $1.5 million to benefit the California Science Center Foundation through table sponsorships, a live auction conducted by KTLA Morning News Co-anchor Chris Schauble, and a raffle for a 2013 Lexus GS 450h.

“The proceeds from this fundraiser enable us to continue providing exceptional science learning and education opportunities for our community,” said Science Center President, Jeffrey Rudolph.

Among the gala guests were community and business leaders as well as elected officials at local, state and federal levels including: California Congressman Dana Rohrbacher; California State Controller John Chiang; California State Senator Rod Wright; California assembly members Richard Bloom, Steve Bradford and Reggie Jones-Sawyer; Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa; former astronauts Daniel Olivas and Garrett Reisman; and celebrities Debbie Allen and June Lockhart.

Top donors to the Discovery Ball included: the Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Oschin Family Foundation, Bank of America and Wells Fargo.
