Plus size Boutique opens in Inglewood.

Sisters, Zakiya Jones and Tashiba Jones-Wilson, owners of ZMJ Denim Inc. (ZMJDI), recently celebrated the grand opening of their Inglewood store on Saturday, March 23. The opening is just one of a few for the young entrepreneurs as they bring fashion and style in plus size options.
Separated only by 12 years, both sisters are graduates of the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising. ZMJ was named after Jones and established in 2007 as a clothing store geared towards plus size women who wanted to look good in their clothes.
Jones-Wilson’s experience includes being a stylist/costumer/designer for television shows such as Dancing with the Stars, TNT’s Hawthorne, Lincoln Heights, The Parkers, to name a few as well as a host of films.
ZMJ’s inspiration came from Jones’ frustration as she struggled to find clothes that complimented her size. “For me, growing up, it was always hard to find special clothing,” stated Jones. “I was forced to shop at Lane Bryant and I was only 13.”
The idea of a store for plus-size women appealed to Jones. It just so happens that another turn of unfortunate events, the writer’s strike of 2007, would bring her sister into the mix.
“I was out of work and my sister [was] coming out of school,” said Jones-Wilson. “Zakiya had expressed her interest in starting her own clothing line due to the frustration of shopping as a plus size woman.”
“I wanted to be a fashion designer so that I could make my own way as far as clothing,” said Jones.
“I agreed because I shop a lot and I know what’s in the stores,” said Jones-Wilson. “I know that there is a lot of quality plus size designers in different stores.”
The ladies have been hard at work the past year getting ZMJDI ready for multiple launches. Their Inglewood store launch marks the end result of time and effort put in by the two sisters. They’ve added some new styles to their line as well.
“We added skinny jeans, finally, to our line-up, that’s definitely in demand,” said Jones-Wilson. We also developed a low-rise style for those who like to have emphasis put on their stomach because not all plus-size women have huge stomachs.”
On the heels of their Inglewood boutique launch comes another. They will be holding an RSVP opening of another store in Culver City on April 6 with special guest Ryeal Simms (relationship counselor and former KJLH host). They also are in the process of opening more ZMJ stores in Sand Diego and the state of Missouri.
“ZMJ is a family-owned business, we’re sisters, we produce quality merchandise—we spent three years perfecting the fit of our denim,” said Jones-Wilson.
