Velma Owens Benton, from Jackson, Michigan, became a devoted military wife; a world traveler; an educator; a loving mother; a doting grandmother and was a shining example of a progressive, Christian woman.

Velma Jeanne Owens was born to Dixie Stevens and Jodie Owens. In the 1940s, Mrs. Benton joined her sister who was living in Tacoma, Washington, and met her future husband, B. J. Benton, a captain in the United States Army. When he returned from the Korean War, they began their marriage, which lasted nearly fifty years. While stationed in Munich Germany their daughter, Monica Jane, was born.

Upon their return to the United States, she graduated from California State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Science degree, began teaching at Lincoln High in East Los Angeles, and then transferred to John Muir Junior High School. At Muir she taught English courses until being appointed Head Counselor in 1975; after twelve years at Muir, Mrs. Benton retired.

In 1998, Mrs. Benton became a grandmother, with the addition of Niles Benjamin, Monica’s son.  She also enjoyed retirement by traveling extensively with her husband until his death; thereafter, she traveled with her twin sister.  At home, Mrs. Benton was an active member of Trinity Baptist Church.

An elegant woman, deeply loved, Velma J. Benton is survived by her twin sister, Thelma; daughter, Judge Monica J. Benton; grandson, Niles Benjamin Fulcher; nieces, Jacquie Briggs; Kimberly Williams (Rickie) and nephews, Jeffrey and Lloyd Jones; grandnephews, Timothy and Todd Briggs, Rickie and Eddie Williams, and great-grandnephew Craig Williams.

The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, April 6, 2013, at Harrison Ross Mortuary located at 4601 S. Crenshaw Blvd. LA, CA 90043.  Interment will follow at the Inglewood Park Cemetery.
