A few students on multiple campuses have formed white student unions in efforts to establish "a confederacy of like minds united in pursuit of common political, cultural, educational, and social interests relative to our unique White Heritage." Though the numbers of the groups are insignificant, their message and the forces represented in their message are not. Amongst many other things, their existence indicates that America has come a long way and still has a long way to go.
Every generation of America has witnessed a mass cultural revolution that forces the constitution to live up to the promises of equality embodied within. However along with new freedoms come splinter groups based on conserving the mindsets and ideologies of previous generations that are no longer prevalent to the majority populous. The end of the civil war gave birth to the Ku Klux Klan, an openly hateful organization that sought, and continues to seek, an America in which white supremacy holds true. Since then, the government has taken multiple steps to establish the racial equality promised within the constitution. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was a major contribution to the political and social landscape of present day.
Considering recent history, modern Americans can say they witnessed a revolution for themselves. For the first time ever a minority was elected to presidency, not once but twice. The sudden awareness of the years of cultural integration within American society drew sharp lines amongst the mass populous, particularly in politics. After experiencing utter defeat, the majority of the Republican Party accepts that the traditional conservative views of America no longer encompass the majority of citizen mindsets, thus causing the party to seek a comprehensive approach to win votes in 2016. It is evident that winning the majority of white male votes will no longer win elections. Once again, we are witnessing the withering away of a once dominant mindset; clearly our time is not that of the 50's.
A few Republican factions remain highly resistant and unaccepting of change within America, feeling that the election was solely lost to the growing number of minority populations that tend to vote democrat. Following the similar trend of revolution, groups based in prejudice have formed in efforts to retain former societal barriers. The unofficial Towson University White Student Union, located in Baltimore, is one of particular discussion. Organized in the fall of 2012, the group has been the source of notoriously bigoted comments, which include defending slavery and demeaning women's rights. The union was largely undermined until the head chair initiated a weekly crime patrol that specifically sought to prevent black on white crime. As controversy over the matter mounted, the University held a peace rally in which thousands of students participated, in efforts to impede any progress of the White Student Union and to reclaim the University’s image. Since the arrival of this White Student Union’s debauchery in national headlines, a few other campuses have sprouted their own. Though not as racially insensitive as the Union in Towson, there existence is still frowned upon and participant numbers remain low. Active members remain confused as they considered themselves to be disenfranchised and discriminated against. The logic at the foundation of these unofficial school clubs is as such; “The Blacks have a Union, the Asians have a Union, why can’t Whites have one too?”
To carry such a slanted view of the current educational landscape indicates the complete neglect of facts that compose present day college institutions. The average university, Towson included, still ranges from 60 to 70 percent white. To claim a “racial genocide” or disenfranchisement in a situation of being the distinct majority is to scapegoat other cultures and larger institutions for your own personal failures. The campus itself is seemingly a White Student Union. To demean and belittle the existence of minority clubs and aid on campus is directly neglecting American history. No more than 70 years ago, a student by the name of James Meredith was escorted by the National Guard on to the campus of the University of Mississippi. As a Black American, Meredith's presence on the campus was spited by a large number of White Americans that wished the university to remain segregated. In efforts to thwart desegregation, hundreds of students gathered violently in front of the campus on the first day of classes. Courageously, Meredith pressed onward into a violent inferno of hate, in efforts to obtain what other Americans had been entitled to since the birth of this nation, an education. Since then many agencies and organizations have formed in order to boost minority presences on campuses around the country.
Obviously as a nation we have come a long way since those times. Though minority populations at Universities, especially the Black population, remain relatively low, there has surely been progress. As America is truly becoming the Land of the Free, there is a lost sense of entitlement amongst those who claim themselves to be “True Americans.” The void left by this sense of entitlement is unsettling, as they are unaware of who to blame for the perceived loss of their country. To those I ask, what makes this YOUR country? Is it the color of your skin or your supposed unique culture and heritage that leads you to illogically reject the citizenship of those of other complexions who have inherited America for centuries? Why America for you but no America for all? There are no indigenous people to this land, besides the Natives. If you're not of Native decent then you are an immigrant just as every other race in this country. They always reference sending Blacks back to Africa, but continue to undermine their own lineage. We consider America to be our home just as you and the immigrants entering now are taking the same leap of faith your ancestors did. This is America at its finest, like it or not.
