The eastern hair-plucking method is gaining customers
The little booth just outside Macy’s in the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza is usually crowded, packed with ladies trying to get the perfect set of eyebrows. It’s called the Bombay Eyebrow Bar and it’s among the hundreds (perhaps thousands?) of such places popping up all over the country where patrons have abandoned tweezing and shaving in favor of “threading.” Threading is said by beauty experts to give more precise control over eyebrow shaping and is gentler on the skin.
“It’s a hair removal technique that lasts longer than waxing or tweezing,” explained Sunny Akhoon, who opened Bombay in 2007.
The practice is an ancient one, originating in Arab countries and spreading throughout the east in places like India and China. It involves a doubled and twisted thin cotton thread, which is rolled over areas of unwanted hairs, plucking them from the follicle. The practice has only recently become popular in Western countries.
At Bombay, prices start at $10.00 for eyebrows but customers can also get threading for upper lips, chins, sideburns as well as the entire face (which will run about $30).
The hair removal will last about three to four weeks, Akhoon said.
Writes Internet reviewer ‘Nito E,’ “[threading technician] Roki is the bomb. She’s young but very good.”
“Great eyebrow threading,” said another patron ‘Brittany P.’
“I love this place,” wrote Erin H.
“It's reasonably priced, they have a rewards stamp card (sixth threading free) and can add the tip to my credit card. They do fantastic work. I had my brows done a bit thin once, but no big deal, I just skipped a visit and it was all good. My brows look natural but extremely clean cut (this from a girl born with a unibrow!) I take whoever is available and have always been happy with their work…”
Akhoon has eyebrow bars in about six other locations including the Macy’s Plaza and the Alley downtown. For more information visit www.bombayeyebrowbar.com.
