Los Angeles – Leaders in the African American and Latino communities today called on Eric Garcetti to denounce hateful comments made by right-wing shock jock Kevin James targeting both groups, and to apologize to those offended by the remarks.

Kevin James

James, who endorsed Garcetti last month, has compared President Obama to a Nazi sympathizer, referred to immigrants as “illegal alien thugs”, and said that Daffy Duck should be President Obama’s obvious choice to replace Justice Souter because Daffy is black, disabled, “a member of the Hollywood elite,” and “a professional victim.”

When he accepted James’ endorsement, Garcetti said he couldn’t be “prouder to have his support,” and said James would be an “adviser” on his campaign.

“This sort of rhetoric has no place in our civic dialogue and raises serious concerns about the kind of company Councilmember Garcetti is willing to keep for the sake of political expediency. It is imperative that these comments--and, more importantly, the fundamental worldview behind them--be renounced in the strongest possible terms. I would expect nothing less anyone who is running to be the Mayor of all of Los Angeles,” said Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas.

"I'm offended and disappointed that Councilman Garcetti has accepted Kevin James to be an advisor on his campaign after the myriad of inflammatory remarks James has made about minorities,” said Congressmember Tony Cardenas. “This so-called advisor has labeled Latinos ‘illegal thug aliens’ and he's denigrated current efforts to bring a path to citizenship to more than 11 million undocumented immigrants. I don't know how Eric Garcetti can have a man that has made such defamatory remarks about Latinos and the immigrant experience as part of his team.

“Latinos and all minority communities need to demand that Councilman Garcetti have Kevin James rescind his offensive and demeaning remarks about minorities and immigrants in this country. And if Mr. James will not rescind his comments, then Councilman Garcetti should renounce Kevin James' endorsement because you cannot say you want to represent all of LA and then allow such comments to stand,” Cardenas said.

"Immigrants are not illegal alien thugs. They are mothers, fathers, daughters and sons trying to realize their dreams in the United States. Kevin James’ comments are offensive to Latinos and to anyone who values mutual human dignity and respect, and they mock the idea of creating a path to citizenship for immigrants who have made America their home. I am deeply disappointed that Eric Garcetti has made Kevin James an adviser on his campaign, and I join other leaders in demanding that Mr. Garcetti immediately denounce James comments," said Dolores Huerta, United Farm Workers co-founder and president of the Dolores Huerta Foundation.

In 2008 James Compared President Obama to a Nazi sympathizer on national television, commenting on a statement by former President George W. Bush.

Later, in a Town Hall column, James made the comparison to Daffy Duck. James has also referred to comprehensive immigration reform as “crap” and “a lie.”

James’ mayoral campaign was also propped up with $600,000 from right-wing billionaire Harold Simmons to a conservative group supporting James. Simmons, has called Obama a “socialist” and “the most dangerous man in America.”

“How many more divisive, debilitating, and shamefully offensive comments should we have to bear from Kevin James?” asked Bishop Noel Jones of City of Refuge Ministries. “Kevin James endorsement and apparent relationship with Eric Garcetti eliminates any doubt that the people’s choice for Mayor should be Wendy Greuel.”
