Lee Gibson, Gwendolyn Spencer-Cooper, & Bishop Craig Worsham

Bishop Craig Worsham and the People’s Independent Church of Christ (PICC) congregation recently recognized their three most senior members.

Lillian Tutson, Gwendolyn Spencer-Cooper, and Lee W. Gibson total more than 258 years of membership at People’s Independent and still attend practically every Sunday.

“We are blessed to have these dedicated believers who inspire and strengthen us by their enduring commitment to the Lord,” said Bishop Worsham, senior pastor.

Sister Tutson, born in 1913, united with PICC in 1920 and has shared her gifts with the church every since. She created ‘Back to Sunday School Night,’ instituted Vacation Bible School, and led the Christian Education Department.  A member of the Women Christian Fellowship, Sister Tutson previously chaired the Circle 3 auxiliary.

Sister Spencer-Cooper, also born in 1913, joined PICC in 1925. An accomplished musician, she began playing the piano and pipe organ for Sunday School at age 15 as well teaching the youth class. Over the years, she served as an Usher, secretary for Circle 10, and assistant church clerk.

Bishop Worsham added, “Although Gwendolyn is a good driver, at her doctor's request, she stopped driving just last year.”

Brother Gibson was born in 1910 and came to PICC in 1936. His church activities include service as Deacon, Trustee Board Chairman, Church Treasurer, Credit Union President and member of the 1014 club. He is also the country’s oldest living Pullman Porter according to the A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum in Chicago.

“I've had a good life," he said during a recent interview. “I had a good job and I raised my family, which is what I wanted to do.”

People’s Independent Church of Christ is located at 5856 West Boulevard in Los Angeles. Call (323) 298-7000 for information about worship services and church ministries.
