According to the American Diabetes Association, one in seven adults in California has been diagnosed with diabetes and about 11.4 million people have pre-diabetes. The number of cases increased 32% over the past decade.
In light of these statistics, Pastor Kelvin Sauls of Holman United Methodist Church launched a community event to promote healthy lifestyles and curb diabetes due to obesity.
During a program hosted by his Health and Wellness Ministry, Dr. Dorris Woods presented relevant information. She wrote and signed copies of the book, ‘How to Prevent Diabetes – I Beat It and You Can, Too.’
In the book, Dr. Woods shares her story and explains how a diabetes diagnosis is made, why fat causes diabetes, and how to determine your body mass index (BMI). She includes a food diary, nutrition label decoder and note pages to record important health tests.
Hats off to Pastor Sauls and his planning team of Rosa Hill, Valeria Norwood, Jeena Quansah and Sandra Hardy for presenting the event and to Caterer Gail Horton for a delicious healthy luncheon.
‘How to Prevent Diabetes – I Beat It and You Can, Too’ is available at the Holman bookstore, Barnes and Noble, Kindle, and Amazon.com.
Zumba fitness classes are offered at Holman UMC on Mondays from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at 3320 West Adams Boulevard in Los Angeles. Call (323) 731-7285 for information.
