The Magic Johnson Foundation’s “Magic of Reading” Program kicked off its May Author Series with former Heavyweight Boxing Champion, James “Bonecrusher” Smith, who visited over 1200 children at Vanguard Middle School and Kennedy Elementary in Compton and MJF’s Community Empowerment Center (CEC) in Victoria Park. Smith spoke with the kids about the importance of education – a long prioritized topic to him as the first Heavyweight Champion to graduate with a college degree – and read from his new book, “M.A.D” Make a Difference. The book is story about resistance, perseverance and grit, the boxer, turned minister and philanthropist, is teaming with MJF to talk with students about developing a champion mindset. Joining Smith was Jeanella Blair, Director of MJF’s Community Empowerment Centers.

Throughout the month of May, MJF will continue to host writing camps and provide students opportunities to interact with bestselling authors/playwrights.

Additionally, MJF is partnering with One World Literacy, a charity focused on the distribution of digital educational content, to provide 3000 free online educational subscriptions to low-income youth during the month of May, and over 25,000 by September 2013.
