Team: Superior Grocers
For the past 31 years walkers have rallied in support of UNCF’s Walk for Education. Hundreds of walkers joined in support of diverse students attending UNCF’s partner HBCU’s (Historically Black Universities and Colleges). Each year major local corporations, fraternities and sororities, Black and Latino alumni, and employees joined the walk to support students to and through college. This year Adai Lamar, of KJLH 102.3FM on air personality served as emcee, joined by R&B recording artist Goapele, and our local politicians, Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, Reggie Jones-Sawyer (D)39, and Councilwoman Jan Perry. UNCF was presented with a surprise donation from Superior Grocers for over $50,000 along with the committed support of $25,000 from BP. Carol Jackson, VP External Affairs, Macy’s served as the walk’s chair and Carolyn Trader, Development Director UNCF managed the event. The walk’s key sponsors, BP, Superior Grocers, Southern California Edison, Union Bank, American Airlines, Xerox, Mattel, The Gas Company and Toyota.
A Special Message From the United Negro College Fund
UCNF wants to personally thank all participants for their support with the 2013 UNCF Walk for Education! Your contributions, encouragement and efforts are the driving force behind our on-going success. Some may ask…What is the impact of your investment or contributions to UNCF?...When you give to UNCF you’re investing in the 60,000 students UNCF help attend college each year, and to graduate with tools and skills they need for their success. When you invest in students with UNCF, the future improves for us all…it is called “social return”—the positive impact of education on the world as a whole.
Your contribution of time, support and funds are greatly appreciated—and we thank you for helping us live up to the ideals expressed in UNCF’s motto, “A mind is terrible thing to waste.”® but a wonderful thing to invest in.
