On June 3, Community Services Unlimited re-launched their weekly produce stand at St. John’s Well Child and Family Center’s S. Mark Taper Foundation Health Center located at 808 W. 58th Street Los Angeles, CA 90037. The produce stand will offer fresh fruits and vegetables from Community Services Unlimited’s mini urban farms and small, regional farmers.

Recent closings of local supermarkets have made it even more difficult to receive quality food in the area. There are organic and small community farms being built in for better access to healthier foods. St. Johns is one of many groups that are helping to make that happen.

Additionally, St. John’s staff, patients, and community members will have the opportunity to subscribe to weekly produce bags that feature a range of seasonal produce and a newsletter with cultural, nutritional, and cooking information for the bag’s contents. The affordably-priced produce bags will be offered in various sizes and can be tailored to specific nutritional needs, including those of diabetic patients.

St. John’s Magnolia Place Health Center also hosts a Community Services Unlimited-run produce stand every Thursday. The produce stands at both Magnolia Place and the S. Mark Taper Health Center are providing critically needed access to healthy, affordable food in a community commonly referred to as a food desert.

The majority of residents in St. John’s South Los Angeles service area live in poverty, 70 percent of adults are overweight or obese, only 11 percent of adults eat the daily recommended amount of fruit and vegetables, and less than one third of children and adults get the respective amount of recommended weekly exercise.

St. John’s Well Child and Family Center serves patients of all ages through a network of 10 health centers and school-based clinics in Central and South Los Angeles and Compton. Our mission is to eliminate health disparities and foster community well-being by providing and promoting the highest quality care in South Los Angeles. Learn more at www.wellchild.org.
