Bishop T. Larry Kirkland

A day-long celebration is planned as Second A.M.E. Church prepares to observe its 105th Anniversary on Sunday, August 18, at 5500 South Hoover Street in Los Angeles.

Three worship services are set to emphasize the theme, ‘Honoring the Past; Building the Future.’ The guest preachers are Licentiate Kirkpatrick Tyler at 7:45 a.m., the Rev. Dr. Cecil ‘Chip’ Murray at 10:45 a.m., and Bishop T. Larry Kirkland, Sr., presiding prelate of the Fifth Episcopal District, at 3 p.m.

Second A.M.E. was organized by the Rev. J.H. Wilson and named by Bishop Abraham Grant on August 6, 1908.  Initially located in East Los Angeles, the congregation moved to San Pedro Place in 1942 and to its current edifice in 1958.

“We have been at our present location for 55 years and have had a wonderful response from the community,” said Pastor John E. Cager.

“This celebration is just another way of giving praise and thanks to God and to our members for their dedication to make a difference and bring souls into the fold.”

In addition to Sunday worship, Second A.M.E. outreach activities include weekly Bible classes, homelessness abatement program, wellness program, eco-sustainable ministries, drug counseling, media training for youth, scouting and a food bank/hot food distribution for the needy.
